MAGNITUDE 6.1 QUAKE RATTLES CYPRUS, NO REPORTS OF DAMAGE, INJURIES

A powerful earthquake of a magnitude of 6.1 rattled Cyprus early on Tuesday. There were no reports of injuries or damage.

The Geological Survey Department said the quake was recorded at 3.08 am. The epicentre was in the sea off Cyprus, 50 kilometres west-northwest of Polis Chrysochous at a depth of 25 kilometres.

“The earthquake was felt throughout Cyprus, especially in Paphos district. It was also felt throughout the eastern Mediterranean,” the department said in an announcement. By 5.30 am a series of after-shocks, with a maximum magnitude of 3.1 were recorded, it added.
